About Us
WHAT IS ALL OF THIS?
The UPL started off in 1998 as joke spin-off group of the Phone Losers of America. Not too long after they started, rbcp of PLA started to work with UPL and the UPL ezine soon became PLA’s defunct ezine successor. The two groups worked on multiple projects together and became partner organizations. That’s the short version. The longer and expanded back history of the UPL can be found in our WikiPedia entry, assuming it hasn’t been recently vandalized (it likely has), or you can hear it verbalized by linear in UPL’s unauthorized episode of PLA Radio.
WHO WE ARE
The group has existed for over a decade now, and the people who have made up that group have changed quite a bit. Here’s some information on the people who currently make up the group, and of course information on the UPL of yesteryear. Find out the future of UPL, and get more information about the backstage players of the UPL.
![]() linear |
I’m linear. i’m the founder and maintainer of the United Phone Losers. Since the beginning of UPL, I have remained the only constant member. I’ve edited almost every issue of the zine (with a few exceptions, typically Rob acting as interim editor). Unless specifically noted otherwise, I’m responsible for everything on this site. I blame the UPL for my failure in life. |
![]() Rob T Firefly (formerly Rufus T. Firefly) |
Rob has been a very important individual in the group. He has acted on occasion as the interim editor of the UPL ezine. Originally known as Rufus T. Firefly, the moniker originally came from the Groucho Marx character of the same name in the movie Duck Soup |
![]() Phractal |
Phractal joined late in the game, but his joining marked big changes for the group. He legitimized the ezine a little more by giving it a more serious and technical tone (well, at least as serious and technical as phonelosers could ever be!). He’s probably one of the more knowledable members in the group. |
![]() bex0 |
bex0 made her appearance in the group just recently after the UPL reformed after its multi-year hiatus. She earned her place in UPL history by helping take over PLA Radio episode #18. She also lives with linear, which is a surefire way to find yourself mixed up in phoneloser hijinx. |
![]() rbcp |
rbcp (or RedBoxChiliPepper, arbie, or sometimes just plain old Brad Carter) is an old man. He’s included as part of the group simply because he founded the PLA, without which there would have been nothing for the UPL to plagarize in early ezine issues. He’s also done a shit ton to make sure UPL has lasted for as long as it has. His personal website can be found here. |
The UPL has been sort of a revolving door of people. Here are some major players in the group from our past. They’re no longer actively involved, but they once were, and we’re all the better for it. Well, for the most part.
Jaded
Jc
el caco
nawleed
Harry Tuttle

Then there were/are a lot of other important folks, who were never officially part of the core group, but are important to us none the less. For example, these people wrote a lot of articles for us, hang out on irc or teleconferences with us, etc. To name a few, there’s JJ, terror eyz, Jolly Spamhead, bikr, Tom Gavin, SQ, vixen, and RogueClown.
